“Everybody does have a book in them, but in most cases that’s where it should stay.”

― Christopher Hitchens

Happy world writing day!

It seems every day has been designated as “World something day”, and today is no different. It is two hours to the end of the day and I have just found out today has been set aside to celebrate writing. What better to commemorate this day with than this fabulous quote by Hitchens?

Like most people, I fancy myself a writer, or at least want to be. All I want to do is write, and maybe one day I will overcome my restlessness and laziness and actually write something.  There are a lot of sayings to help motivate aspiring writers- the most popular one a variation of there’s a book in everyone-a saying supposed to inspire people to just go for it. I have always suspected this was not true.  So many people call themselves writers and they churn out words and lines and sentences which all add up to piece of literature. Sometimes I read one of such writings and think to myself “Everyone thinks they are a writer”  However, in thinking this about another person’s work, I end up considering my own work (or lack of thereof) through the same lens. I believe if I really applied myself I could write something half decent, but do I really have the talent to wrote a book or am I just another person who foolishly thinks they can write?

But by God, I want to write. When I’m out all I dream of is getting back home to write. Then I get home and watch television till I fall asleep. I want to write every and any thing; a book, a magazine, a TV show, a movie, a blog, a greeting card. I just want to write.

Everyone does not have a book in them, just like everyone does not having a singing voice in them or athletic ability in them. But how will you know if you don’t try?

Everyone has a book inside of them – but it doesn’t do any good until you pry it out.

-Jodi Picoult

Go forth and write.
